The 16th Square
Mar 23, 2012 | zanespirithetic@gmail.com | Past Exhibitions, Uncategorized | 0

The Axis Mundi Artist Coalition of New Mexico is announcing its first group exhibition featuring 8 visual artists and 3 music acts working in and around Albuquerque, New Mexico. “The 16th Square” will be featured at the 5G Gallery, part of the Factory On 5th Art Space, during the entire month of February 2012. The Exhibition lineup includes four painters, (Chris Pendelton, Allen Colmenares, Brandon Atencio, and Zane White) four ceramic artists, (Evan Speegle, Nikki Denisson, Casey Pendergast, and Becky Hefty) and three music acts for the opening night. (Bat Wings For Lab Rats, Bullettooth, and Mat Thomas) The Exhibition explores and captures the essence of “sacred space” within many diverse social themes and across conventional social boundaries.

The Exhibition is set to open on Saturday, February 4th from 5pm until 10pm, and will feature three musical acts during the course of the night as well as free refreshments and plenty of art. Admission will be free but donations will be accepted to help pay the musicians and artists involved. Guests will have the opportunity to meet with the artists and musicians throughout the course of the night. The show will be open from Friday, February 3rd on through the end of the month and will also feature a sale and demonstration weekend that will take place Friday, February 17th through Sunday, February 19th during the day from 10am – 6pm.

Using the theme of sacred space as a jump off point, the artists in the exhibition all provide unique perspectives concerning this theme and apply it to many contexts and situations present in contemporary life including social justice, consecrated belief, and ritualized activities.  There is no limitation imposed on any of the artists involved concerning the content, material, or display choice, so the result is a very dynamic representation of sacred space across cultural, artistic, and personal preconceptions. Depictions of sacred activities, people, and ideas will be featured alongside functional ceramic vessels and sculptures. The painters represent many differing approaches to depiction including traditional naturalism, surrealism, street art, pop art, symbolism, and complete abstraction. The ceramic artists also represent many differing approaches to working in clay including sculpture, fine vessel making, and a wide range of firing atmospheres, texture, and pallet.

This exhibition brings together many artists from the Albuquerque art community together for one amazing event, and will bring a greater cultural and philosophical understanding of the sacred experience in Albuquerque and around the world.

Hosted By the 5G Gallery Factory on 5th Art Space located at 1715 Fifth St NW Albuquerque, New Mexico 87107. There is also a nice café inside called the Kosmos. Guests visiting on normal hours of operation have the opportunity to have a fine sandwich, muffin, or coffee before or after visiting the exhibition. The hours of normal operation for the Kosmos and the 5G Gallery are Monday – Friday 9am -2:30 pm and for special events.
